Sometimes, the simplest music can be the most effective. An example of this is a promotional video I recently created for Breathing Spaces. Breathing Spaces provides resources and support for family caregivers. We wanted the video to be authentic and from the heart.

The Breathing Spaces slogan is “sometimes you simply need a space to catch your breath”. The opening shot superimposes this slogan over a peaceful image.
Under the voice over of the slogan, I wanted music that would reinforce the message and help the view catch their breath. I used the Alchemy synthesizer to create a very simple yet soothing chord with a slightly modulating pitch.
The other music in the video is at the end over the contact information.

I wanted the video to have an upbeat, hopeful ending with a sense of motion to encourage action. I could not create a visual sense of motion because the contact information needed to remain steady in order to be readable. Instead, I used arpeggiated chords with a rising pitch to create the desired sense of motion.
The musical bookends of this video are musically very simple yet they reinforce the intended message. Music doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective. It all depends on the context.
