When it comes to writing text for mobile devices, less is more. We live in a visual world and react more strongly to visual content than to text. The most effective mobile content makes strong use of images.

That said, images alone cannot convey the entire message. A good image captures our attention but good text keeps it and drives conversions. We have about eight seconds to capture a viewer’s attention so text must be simple yet carry a big impact. Here are five tips for writing good mobile text.

  1. Keep it short, no more than 30 characters.
  2. Put the most relevant words first.
  3. Because of the viewer’s short attention span use short sentences.
  4. If you can, include memorable one-liners. Remember Nike’s “Just Do it” slogan?
  5. Use bullets for clarity – they are easy to scan.

Following these guidelines will create tight, compelling copy that plays well on mobile devices.
