I have previously written about how your video’s music should complement your message, not compete with it. A perfect example of this is Mozart’s opera “Don Giovanni”.

The opera is a dramma giocoso (joking drama) which mixes comedy and tragedy. While the opera itself begins rather comically, the music and words are in stark contrast to the dark and foreboding overture which we had just heard. From the very beginning, we are given a hint that things may not work out so well for the Don.

To refresh your memory of the plot, I present this very brief summary from Wikipedia: “Don Giovanni is a young, arrogant, and sexually promiscuous nobleman who abuses and outrages everyone else in the cast until he encounters something he cannot kill, beat up, dodge, or outwit”. That something is the spirit of Il Commendatore, the father of a girl whom he had wronged earlier in the opera. Don Giovanni had killed him in the first Act as he attempted to defend his daughter’s honor. His reunion with Il Commendatore is a fatal encounter. This is where Mozart exhibits skills that we marketers should envy. When the spirit of Il Commendatore appears at Don Giovanni’s door, Mozart uses the same dark chords from the foreboding overture. Mozart set us up for this moment from the very beginning! This musical symmetry reinforces what we felt all along (and what Mozart wanted us to feel). What a great example of reinforcing the message with music!
